home-business-success-recipeOr....How Ruining Yet Another Meal Taught Me a Lesson In Succeeding From Home.

Okay, I admit it. Cooking is not my favorite activity. In fact, they could have taken out my kitchen equipment and replaced them with vending machines and I'd probably be okay with it. In fact, for a family reunion I was asked to submit my favorite recipe with four ingredients or less and my response was:

1. Open Yellow Pages

2. Look Under "Chinese Food"

3. Place order

4. Pick up

So, today I decided to bake a chocolate cake...with a little help from Betty Crocker, of course. All I had to do was follow a recipe and I could count on a cake my family would eat. I assembled the ingredients, mixed them up, and put the cake in the oven. Twenty minutes later, I realized I had left the three eggs on the counter and forgotten to include them in the recipe. Let's suffice it to say my hubby went to store and bought another cake mix and did it himself. (I love enlightened men!)

If you don’t follow a recipe, you won’t get the intended result.  In cakes..or in business.

Here are some tips to make sure your business success recipe is just that….a success!

Tip 1:  Assemble all your ingredients.  In this case, before you begin make sure you have everything you need to conduct that activity.  For instance, if you’re going to be making calls your ingredients might include things like:

  • A quiet place where you won’t be disturbed;
  • The names and phone numbers of the people you’ll contact;
  • A time zone chart so you don’t call them too early, during meals, or too late;
  • ‘A glass of water in case your throat gets dry;
  • Your script;
  • Your flow chart, ie. what is the desired resort for the call?; and
  • A place to take notes, whether that’s an online prospect manager or index cards

Your list may vary. Just make sure you assemble everything you will need before you begin.  Many people “forget” some key items they need and waste valuable time stopping and starting.

Tip 2:  Follow the recipe.  Now this is where I messed up baking the cake.  Because, although I had assembled all the ingredients, I got districted by a phone call and forgot to include the eggs.  If I had taken my time and made sure I followed the recipe (“add eggs”….how hard can that be? ), my results would have been completely different.

So, what’s your recipe?  Your recipe should consist of the following:

  • What to say when someone answers the phone.
  • If you get voice mail, what message do you leave? Or do you NOT leave a message and try another time.
  • What step you take to properly quality your prospect to go to the next step.
  • Where you will be directing this person…a live call, web site, sizzle call?
  • Set an appointment to follow-up or for them to call you.
  • Confirm anything necessary by email; ask for their primary email address if they’re using a free account.
  • Make the appropriate notes in your Prospect Manager or daily planner.
  • Keep track of dials, answers, those you get to the next step, follow-ups, and sales.

Tip 3:  Tweak your recipe to get your desired results.

Have you ever cooked something and said, “Next time I want more garlic..I want to add wine when I saute this again.”

To get optimum results for YOU, you may want to tweak your recipe.  This does not mean change everything at one time or change it by a lot.  For instance, if I quadrupled the garlic AND added two cups of wine  , it could turn out terribly.  But I wouldn’t know why it was so bad because I had changed more than one thing and I changed it by too much.

Some things you may want to tweak to get improved results:

  • Your lead generation source or technique.
  • Your script.
  • Where you are sending people.
  • Your follow up.
